How to photograph your zines

Ready to photograph your zine? Here are a few tips, tricks and idea.

White backgrounds
You can’t go wrong with a plain background.
Keep it on theme
Made a zine about a specific topic? Consider incorporating that into the background.
Different colours
Always a great way to make your zines stand out.
Illustrate it
Have you illustrated your zine? Why not illustrate parts of your photos.
Small zines
If you’ve made a tiny zine, put something next to it so you can show how small it is.
Front and back
This is a great way to show the front and back in one photo.
Big zines
Same with the small zines, consider how you can show its size.
Plants
You can’t go wrong with using nature as a backdrop.
On theme
This is a great example of matching the background to the cover of the zine.
Create a scene
Consider adding extra items in the background. When carefully chosen these will really elevate your photos.
Different formats
Don’t forget to consider different angles, especially if you’ve made a one‑off.
Film it
This is a really great example, you could also take photos of each step too.
Multiple covers
If you have different variations, show them all!
Flat lays
If your zine has little extras with it, like stickers etc this is a great way of showing it all.
Use your hands
If your zine won’t sit flat, use your hands or a weight to keep it flat.
